Janelle Young, Health Care Assistant – Nanaimo

At 51 years old I never envisioned returning to school, but life brings us opportunities that if you are brave enough to search for and follow through with, even mature individuals can accomplish remarkable things. “Find the job that you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Early 2024 I was at a fork in the road. I could continue to struggle with my small business or find something new. I had a few friends comment that I should investigate being a care aid as the demand is high. I was also navigating my way through getting help for a family member who was living with dementia.

After a bit of research, I decided that I wanted to see what the process would be. I tried to get information about different colleges and even the HCAP program. I finally connected with Cindy at DCC in the Nanaimo campus. I met with her to get information and a few hours later, I walked out enrolled in the program.

I was 51 and going back to school, it had been a very long time since I left high school. I was terrified! I would not only be with younger students, but it was also going to be a virtual classroom. My computer skills were ok, but this was something above my skill level. All the online instructors were fantastic. Heather helping a classroom navigate the virtual setting. For many it was their first time using a computer. She always had a smile on her face and patience in her voice.

Sherry spent months teaching a diverse range of students. She was understanding, passionate, and made it her goal to have a large group of students ready to succeed in their new careers. The knowledge I received in her classes helped me personally deal with the situations with my mother and allowed me to continue and eventually graduate.

Kandace, the clinical instructor, was amazing. She taught me more than just the practical parts but showed how to vary how we deal with the diverseness of individuals, both personally and professionally.

Marilyn got us ready for getting careers. Thank you, Cindy, Heather, Sherry, Kandace, and Marilyn!  The campus employees are helpful and supportive, Colin you answer questions like a rock star!  I am ready to start my journey with more than just new practical experiences but also personal ones.
