Health Care Assistants (HCA) provide important services to society, giving personal support and valuable care to clients—including seniors, people who have an injury or a disability, and anyone who might require short-term or ongoing assistance and support.
As a health care assistant, you’ll be learning how to assess the needs of others in order to provide the best care possible. Your training will prepare you with the necessary knowledge and hands-on experience. Here’s a quick look at some of the question types you might encounter during your job interviews after graduation.
1. Answering “Why” Questions With Personal Anecdotes
Employers want to know who you are and why you’d make a great addition to the team. Asking “Why” questions is an effective way to get to know prospective employees, especially since these questions leave lots of room for personalized answers and short anecdotes. Answering these types of questions can highlight your personality and values, making you stand out among other candidates.
For example, employers might ask why you chose to be a health care assistant, or why you decided to apply for the available position. Take this opportunity to give a detailed response that showcases your caring nature and passion for the job. You might also want to show that you’ve done your research, knowing exactly who you’re speaking with and what sets them apart from other employers in the industry. Sharing a bit of your personality, interests, and goals can help future employers make a more informed decision.
2. Answering “How” Questions to Showcase Your Skills After HCA Training
Health care assistants work with a variety of people, and need to maintain a pleasant and compassionate attitude despite any obstacles they might face. As such, it helps to highlight your ability to work effectively under pressure, along with your strong communication skills. Employers will want to know that you’re capable of providing excellent health care assistance, so take the time to impress them with your clinical know-how and on-site experience—all of which you will gain through your health care assistant training.
Expect that “how” questions may be used to test your skills and experience. For example, employers might ask you to explain how you would assist others in hypothetical cases. It’s important to emphasize your ability to assess a client’s needs and concerns—adapting accordingly while keeping their emotional, as well as physical well-being in mind. Doing so will make you stand out as a noteworthy candidate.
3. Proving Your Knowledge and Readiness for the Job by Answering “What” Questions
During your interviews, you might want to show that you’re ready and eager to become a health care assistant. You can do this by demonstrating your industry knowledge, along with your high personal standards and strong sense of responsibility. Here, “what” questions can vary, either focusing on task-specific details by asking you what you know about certain concepts, or looking for more personal reflections to answer such questions as: “What are some of your top qualities or attributes that make you perfect for the job?” This is a great opportunity to highlight your knowledge and preparedness for the job. At the same time, showcasing your passion and enthusiasm for the role will also serve you well.
