Care Providers Association (BCCPA) has flagged a severe shortage of Care Aides in the province.** That means the region will require many more Health Care Assistants over the next few years, making now a strategic time to get trained and prepare to enter this booming field.

COMPETITIVE SALARY

According to the 2018 Labour Force Survey, the average wage for a Health Care Assistant is $24.96 - $30.24 per hour.** What’s more, the unemployment rate is low, and as an essential service, this industry tends to be immune to fluctuations in the economy. WorkBC notes that the workforce, mostly females, earn notably higher wages in this industry than others.

Becoming a Skilled Health Care Assistant

Health Care Aides provide support services for medical clients, including elderly patrons, injured or disabled persons and chronically ill people who require short term assistance or ongoing support. They work under the guidance/supervision of a nurse or health professional. A Health Care Assistant's duties will vary depending on client needs and where you're employed, but some typical responsibilities include:

  • Assisting clients with bathing, grooming, dressing and other person hygiene activities
  • Feeding clients
  • Assisting with bed transfers, lifting, turning and walking
  • Therapeutic activities such as range of motion exercises
  • Medication Administration
  • Ensuring Safety
  • Communication with Clients, observing and reporting on client condition

As valuable members of the health care system, HCA's may work in a wide variety of medical facilities, including:

  • Retirement Homes
  • Hospices
  • Extended Care Facilities
  • Assisted Living Residences
