Vivian Amanze – Health Care Assistant – Nanaimo

“I am writing this reflection letter to share my journey and experience in the Health Care Assistant (HCA) program at Discovery Community College (DCC).

I first heard about Discovery Community College through online research.  When I began exploring career options in the health care field, DCC stood out because of its strong reputation, supportive learning environment, and hands-on training opportunities.  After researching the Health Care Assistant program further, I felt confident that this was the right place to begin my journey in health care.

My decision to pursue a career as a Health Care Assistant came from a deep desire to help others.  I have always felt compassion toward seniors and individuals who require assistance with daily living.  Seeing the impact that health care workers have on vulnerable individuals inspired me to become part of that support system.  I wanted a career that was meaningful, stable, and allowed me to make a real difference in people’s lives.  The HCA role aligns perfectly with my personal values of empathy, patience, and service.

My experience in the HCA program has been both challenging and rewarding.  The program provided a  balance of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.  Through classroom/online instruction, I learned about human anatomy, infection control, communication techniques, personal care skills, and the importance of professionalism and ethics in health care.  The clinical placements were especially impactful, as they allowed me to apply what I learned in real-life settings.  Working directly with clients helped me develop confidence, critical thinking skills, and compassion.

Throughout the program, I faced several challenges.  Balancing school responsibilities with personal commitments was not always easy.  There were moments when the workload felt overwhelming, especially during exams and clinical practice preparation.  Learning new medical terminology and mastering hands-on skills also required dedication and extra practice.  However, I overcame these challenges by staying organized, seeking support from instructors and classmates, and maintaining a positive mindset.  Each obstacle I faced strengthened my resilience and determination to succeed.

Completing this program is truly changing my life.  It has opened doors to meaningful employment opportunities in health care facilities, long-term care homes, and community settings.  More importantly, it has boosted my confidence in my abilities.  I now feel prepared to enter the workforce with professional skills, knowledge, and a strong sense of responsibility.  This program has not only equipped me with technical skills but has also helped me grow personally.  I am more confident, disciplined, and motivated to continue advancing in my health care career.

In conclusion, my journey in the HCA program at Discovery Community College has been transformative.  It has confirmed my passion for caregiving and has prepared me for a fulfilling career in health care.  I am grateful for the guidance of my instructors and the support of my family throughout this experience.  Completing this program marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in my life.
