Ruth Akinmolayan, Health Care Assistant – Nanaimo

My journey toward a career in healthcare began in January 2024, a path I initially approached with skepticism. Having spent my entire professional life as a preschool teacher, the prospect of transitioning to the role of a Health Care Assistant felt daunting. This apprehension was further compounded when someone suggested that my accent might pose a barrier. However, rather than discouraging me, this comment ignited a fire within me. I resolved to actively participate in class, using every opportunity to improve my accent and demonstrate my commitment.

My search for a suitable college led me online, where I discovered Discovery Community College. From the moment I contacted them for information, I felt supported. Cindy went above and beyond, diligently following up and ensuring all my questions were answered. Her dedication was remarkable and deserves commendation.

One of my earliest and most memorable experiences at Discovery Community College was learning to type without looking at the keyboard. This seemingly simple skill had eluded me for years, despite numerous attempts. I had almost given up on mastering it, but thanks to Heather’s instruction and my own perseverance, I finally achieved this goal. I am immensely proud of this accomplishment and deeply grateful to Heather for her guidance.

The online classes with Sherry were equally transformative. She possessed a remarkable ability to simplify complex concepts, effectively preparing us for the challenges ahead. Her patience and understanding were truly exceptional, particularly given the diverse accents within the class. I often wondered how she managed to understand everyone so clearly. Sherry is, without a doubt, one of the best teachers I have ever had.

Kandance, who taught the physical classes, proved to be another exceptional instructor. Like Sherry, she created a supportive and welcoming learning environment. She was approachable, accommodating, and made the in-person learning experience both engaging and accessible.

My overall experience at Discovery Community College has been overwhelmingly positive. The instructors were outstanding, providing invaluable support and guidance. I could not have asked for a better learning environment. Inspired by this experience, I am determined to continue my education and advance my career. My ultimate goal is to become an LPN, and finally an RPN. I know that challenges will arise – if my accent wasn’t a barrier, age would not be, but I am undeterred. My time at Discovery Community College has instilled in me confidence and belief that I can achieve my dreams. If I can do it, so can you!
