Robin McLaren – Health Care Assistant – Campbell River

“I first heard about the Health Care Assistant HCAP program from my daughter, who had heard about it online. I started the application process in 2002 but was encouraged by my employer to remain as we were considered essential. As the aquaculture industry is in decline on the west coast of Canada, and the need for healthcare workers continues to rise, I decided now would be a great time to apply. While redoing my resume with NIEFS I noticed a poster for the HCAP program and began applying

The health care assistant program provided formal training and practical experience, which has given me more confidence as I enter a new field of employment. Initially I felt daunted by the number of onboarding requirements and the amount of computer use required but was supported and guided each time I reached out. I became more comfortable trying things on my own and began learning a lot. The onboarding, technical, and teaching support thru the process, from application to graduation, was amazing. I had very little experience with computers and have learnt a lot about computers as well as providing care. I feel well equipped to apply and work as a health care assistant.

I look forward to gaining experience and making a difference in the daily lives of people in my community. I have a return of service agreement with Island Health in the field of home support. I am grateful for the opportunity to be sponsored and supported through this training and education and would recommend the Health Care Assistant HCAP program to anyone interested in entering healthcare.”
