Maame Ama Kufuor – Health Care Assistant – Nanaimo
“My name is Maame Ama Kufuor, and I am a recent graduate of the Health Care Assistant program at Discovery Community College. I am passionate about providing compassionate, respectful, and person-centered care to individuals who require support in their daily lives. I am writing this reflection letter to share my journey through the program and how it has shaped me both personally and professionally.
I first heard about DCC through a friend who recommended the program to me. After learning more about it, I became interested because it offered a clear pathway into healthcare and aligned with my desire to build a meaningful career.
What led me to pursue a career in this area of study was my passion for caring for others. I have always wanted to work in a field where I could make a positive difference in people’s daily lives. Supporting individuals with personal care, promoting dignity, and being present during vulnerable moments inspired me to choose this profession.
My experience in the program has been both challenging and rewarding. I completed the theory portion online, which provided me with strong foundational knowledge in infection control, personal care, safety procedures, and person-centered care. After finishing the theory, I began my clinical placement at NSV with an instructor, where I started applying what I had learned in a real healthcare setting. I later transitioned fully to hands-on practicum, caring directly for residents in long-term care. I worked with an experienced mentor at NSV who had in-depth knowledge and guided me through various skills, including baths, catheter care, ostomy care, feeding, documentation, and assisting with mobility equipment such as sit-to-stand lifts.
I also completed a home support placement at Long Lake Chateau, which was more of an assisted living setting with some complex care needs. There, I worked with another supportive mentor and gained experience managing multiple clients independently, sometimes caring for up to 10 clients in one shift. This placement helped me improve my time management, organization, and confidence in working more independently.
Throughout the program, I faced challenges that helped me grow. Managing busy shifts, adapting to new environments, and handling emotional situations—such as caring for a client on palliative care and experiencing my first client fall—were difficult but valuable learning moments. I overcame these challenges by staying calm, seeking guidance from my mentors, and maintaining compassion and professionalism. Each challenge strengthened my resilience and clinical competence.
Completing this program has significantly changed my life. It has increased my confidence in my abilities, prepared me for employment in healthcare, and clarified my career goals. I now feel capable of working independently while providing safe, respectful, and person-centered care. Beyond employment, this program has helped me grow personally by building patience, empathy, and emotional strength.
Overall, this journey has been transformative, and I am grateful for the knowledge, mentorship, and real-world experience I gained. I feel prepared and motivated to continue my career in healthcare and to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those I care for.”
