Christine Kamau – Health Care Assistant – Nanaimo

“I first learned about Discovery Community College and the Health Care Assistant (HCA) program through research and recommendations while looking for a practical and meaningful career in health care. I was interested in a program that offered hands-on learning, strong clinical experience, and real preparation for work in the community. After reviewing the program structure and speaking with others who had taken a similar path, I felt Discovery Community College was the right choice for me.

I decided to pursue a career as a Health Care Assistant because I have always had a strong interest in helping others. I enjoy working with people, especially those who need support in their daily lives. I wanted a career where I could make a real difference, provide compassionate care, and feel that my work has purpose. Health care felt like the right path for me, and the HCA role aligned well with my values of kindness, patience, and service.

My experience in this program has been very educational and transformative. The classroom learning gave me a strong foundation in care skills, safety, communication, and professionalism. The clinical placements in long-term care and home support helped me apply what I learned in real situations. At first, I felt nervous and unsure of myself, especially during the early clinical days. However, with guidance from instructors, mentors, and experienced care aides, I gradually became more confident and comfortable in my role.

One of the main challenges I faced was fear of making mistakes and adjusting to new environments. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed, especially when learning new skills such as transfers, bathing, toileting, and communication with residents who have cognitive challenges. However, I learned that making mistakes is part of the learning process. Through reflection, feedback, and practice, I improved my skills and gained confidence. I also learned the importance of teamwork, time management, and person-centered care.

Throughout the program, I achieved many milestones. I gained hands-on experience, learned how to work independently, improved my communication skills, and developed confidence in providing care. I also learned how small acts of kindness, such as listening, offering reassurance, or helping with simple tasks, can make a big difference in a person’s life.

Completing this program is already changing my life. I feel more confident in myself and my abilities. I now have clear employment goals and feel prepared to enter the workforce as a Health Care Assistant. I am excited about seeking employment in long-term care or home support and continuing to grow in this field. This program has not only given me skills, but it has also helped me discover my passion for compassionate care.

Overall, I am very grateful for this experience. The Health Care Assistant program at Discovery Community College has helped shape my future, increased my confidence, and prepared me for a meaningful career where I can positively impact the lives of others.’
