Akwasi Acheampong – Health Care Assistant – Nanaimo
“I am writing to reflect on my journey through the Health Care Assistant (HCA) program at Discovery Community College.
I learned about Discovery Community College and the HCA program through recommendations from a friend who was already pursuing an HCA program in another school. My decision to pursue a career as a Health Care Assistant was driven by a deep desire to care for others and make a positive impact in people’s lives. I have always been drawn to roles that involve compassion, patience, and service. Over time, I realized that working in health care would allow me to support vulnerable individuals while also building a purposeful and rewarding career. The HCA program aligned perfectly with my personal values and long-term goals, especially my passion for helping seniors and individuals who require daily support.
Throughout the program, I have gained valuable knowledge and practical skills that have shaped me both professionally and personally. My experiences during clinical practice in long-term care and preceptorship in both home support and long-term care settings were especially impactful. I assisted residents with personal care, including bathing, dressing, oral hygiene, toileting, feeding, transfers, and mobility support. I also learned the importance of effective communication, dignity, and emotional support when working with residents and their families. Being mentored by my preceptors helped me build confidence, improve my skills, and understand the importance of teamwork in health care settings.
The program was not without challenges. Balancing coursework, clinical responsibilities, and personal commitments was demanding and draining. There were moments when the physical nature of the work, time management, and adapting to new care environments felt overwhelming. However, through perseverance, guidance from instructors and preceptors, and my own determination, I was able to overcome these challenges. Each difficulty became an opportunity for growth, learning, and self-improvement. I am proud of how far I have come and the resilience I have developed throughout this journey.
Completing the HCA program is already changing my life in many positive ways. I feel more confident in my abilities, more knowledgeable about patient care, and more prepared to enter the workforce. This program has clarified my employment goals and strengthened my commitment to working in health care. I now see myself as a competent and compassionate caregiver who can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. The skills, confidence, and professional identity I have gained through this program will continue to guide me as I pursue employment and future opportunities in the health care field.
In conclusion, my experience at Discovery Community College has been transformative. The HCA program has not only prepared me for employment but has also helped me grow as a person.
A special thank you to all my instructors who taught and prepared us through this journey. I am grateful for the education, support, and practical experience I have received, and I am confident that this program has set a strong foundation for my future in health care.”
